SIA Statement Following Commerce’s Announcement to Extend the Temporary General License

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), representing U.S. leadership in semiconductor manufacturing, design, and research, has released the following statement from SIA President & CEO John Neuffer following the Department of Commerce announcement adding Huawei affiliates to the entities list and providing an extension of the Temporary General License until November 2019.
“While we are reviewing the announcement today and its implications for the semiconductor industry, we urge the Commerce Department to expedite the review, approval, and issuance of licenses for sales of commercial products that do not raise national security concerns, particularly for items that can be easily substituted by foreign competition not subject to the entity listing. President Trump stated at the G-20 meeting in May, and elsewhere, that U.S. companies should be allowed to sell products to Huawei as long as the sale does not negatively impact U.S. national security. To promote U.S. leadership and economic competitiveness in the semiconductor industry, we continue to encourage the Administration to take prompt action on license approvals where there is no nexus to national security. We appreciate the Department of Commerce’s continued engagement with industry on this matter.”
